PlaNIS is the financial
advisement business unit of PlaNet Finance Group, dedicated to
Socially Responsible funds investing in microfinance.
To facilitate and finance its growth, PlaNIS has been spun-off
from PlaNet Finance as of June 2010 with the entrance of new
shareholders: Impact Nord Sud Développement (a fund managed by
Natixis Asset Management) and Finaréo (an European private
equity fund), becoming a dedicated subsidiary benefiting from
the precense and local knowledge of PlaNet Finance Group’s
network.
PlaNIS was created with the aim of
responding to the growing needs of the developing microfinance
institutions and to link them with the best investors of the
market and to provide them with tools usually used by and reserved
to other markets.
This is why PlaNIS
was organized as a financial services
company in microfinance specialized in three products: , and .
In 2009, the PlaNIS team (13 permanents
+ 3 interns) has met 300 microfinance institutions in 40
countries. Moreover, 70 investments proposals were drawn up and
nearly USD 50 million lent to microfinance institutions. PlaNIS is monitoring a USD 165 million
portfolio, coming from 9 funds, distributed between 77
microfinance institutions in 31 countries. 4 of those funds are
managed by responsAbility; main partner of PlaNIS.
PlaNIS Activities :
• Search and assessment of
microfinance institutions
- Search of potential investment propositions:
- Use of contacts and working relationships of PlaNet
Finance Group (PlaNet Finance works with more than 300
microfinance institutions each year).
- Prospect of microfinance institutions by PlaNIS’ Regional
Investment Officers, during due diligence or on field
missions.
- Selection of strongest and most promising microfinance
institutions.
- Valuation of selected microfinance institutions:
- Valuation of risks and viability of the microfinance
institutions as well as its needs.
- Due Diligence conducted on field by two analysts, of whom
one senior.
- Investment committee, then proposal of the microfinance
institution to the most adapted fund (responsAbility, Banque
de Luxembourg, Triple Jump, MicroFund, MicroWorld,
Impact Nord Sud Développement...).
• Follow-up of the
transaction and the reimbursement
- Monitoring of funds lent by the investors to the
microfinance institution: PlaNIS is the intermediate between
investors and microfinance institutions.
- Follow-up of the reimbursement of the loan as well as the
financial situation of the microfinance institution.
- Study of the possibility of a loan renewal.
• Restructuring
- Intervention in case of a financial risk from a
microfinance institution.
- Follow-up of the restructuring of the microfinance
institution in case of default.
• Diverse interventions
- Participation to working groups (Paris Europlace, the
European microfinance platform).
- Participation to microfinance conferences.

Granted loans amounts from USD 20 K to USD 150 K, with an
average length of 12 months.

structured financing activities through syndication or
arrangements mandates, and more sophisticated structured

working on Equity investment in Africa (current mandate with
NMI)
PlaNIS is working on the creation of a currency
hedging solution in microfinance, through the MICROFIX project
(www.microfix.com), of which PlaNIS will be in charge of the
management. Supported since inception by FMO, BNP PARIBAS and
TCX, MICROFIX is intended to offer to the different actors of
microfinance, the opportunity to obtain a currency hedging
solution, on currencies and length on which they are active and
traditionally non offered by commercial banks.
